Excursions in the Zillertal

Awaken your inquiring mind and discover the fascinating natural wonders of the Spannagel cave system! Located on the Hintertux Glacier, you will find the entrance to Tyrol’s largest natural cave at the Spannagelhaus, only 10 minutes from the cable car mountain station (section 2).

After an ascent to 2.000 m with the Ahornbahn cabe car, you will experience eagles, falcons, buzzards and eagle owls in their natural habitat at Europe’s highest birds of prey sanctuary, whilst learning interesting facts about the aerial antics of these kings of the sky!

The almost 300-year-old farmhouse in Laimach near Hippach takes you on a journey into the past.  Besides offering an insight into rural life of yesteryear, you can also sense the history of the Strasser children in the living room, who inhabited the house in the 19th Century and introduced the Christmas carol, “Silent Night, Holy Night” to the rest of the world with their concert performances.

It is with good reason that the Zillertal High Road is considered to be one of Austria’s most beautiful alpine roads.  The winding panorama road leads you up to 2,020 m above sea level on the western flanks of the valley.  Breathtaking views of the Zillertal and Kitzbühel Alps can be experienced along the approx. 20 km long summit section above the tree line.

After crossing the Gerlos Pass, you will arrive at the Krimml Waterfalls, which come crashing down to the depths from a drop height of some 30 metres! Walk on the viewing path to experience this incredible natural spectacle at first hand. The refreshing experience is rounded off with a visit to the “House of Water” with Aqua-Park.

Take an exciting journey into the history of Europe and follow in the footsteps on the silver miners after the 800 m deep entrance to the largest mine of the Middle Ages.  A truly extraordinary underground experience!

Discover Murmelland (Marmot Country) with its playground and petting zoo on the Zillertal High Road.  Hubertus Wild Animal Trail Hochzillertal begins not far from here, where you and your children can get better acquainted with the world of local alpine animals.
